Also known as: Bioinformatics Associate · Computational Biologist · Genomics Data Analyst
Analyses DNA, RNA and protein data with software to support biology research, diagnostics or drug work.
What you’d do
A bioinformatics analyst uses software to analyse biological data such as DNA and RNA sequences and protein structures. Genomics and diagnostics companies, research institutes, and pharma and contract research firms hire them. A day involves running analysis pipelines, writing scripts, checking data quality and explaining results to lab scientists.
- Run sequence analysis pipelines
- Clean, annotate and store genomic data
- Write scripts in Python or R
- Report results to lab scientists
How you get in
Some freshers join genomics or diagnostics firms as bioinformatics trainees or associates, often after projects or internships that show programming and data skills. Many employers and most research labs prefer a master's degree.
