An archivist preserves, catalogues and provides access to historical records such as manuscripts, files, photographs and maps. Employers include national and state archives, museums, universities, research institutes and some large organisations with record rooms. A typical day involves sorting and describing documents, supervising conservation and digitisation, and helping researchers find material.

How you get in
Most entrants add a postgraduate degree or a diploma in archival studies after a B.A. History. Government archive posts are filled through recruitment notices or public service commissions; project-based digitisation work is a common first job.
