Aircraft Maintenance Engineer
Also known as: AME · Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer · Aircraft Technician
Inspects, services and repairs aircraft; certifying them fit to fly needs a DGCA licence.
What you’d do
An aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) keeps aircraft safe to fly by inspecting, servicing and repairing them and, once licensed, certifying that work. Employers include airlines, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) firms, helicopter and charter operators, and flying schools. Work happens in hangars and on the ramp, often in shifts.
- Inspect aircraft and record defects
- Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks
- Follow approved manuals and procedures
- Certify work once licensed by DGCA
How you get in
Two routes exist: a DGCA-approved AME training programme, or an engineering degree (aerospace, mechanical or electronics) followed by DGCA module exams and supervised work experience. B.Tech graduates often join airlines or MROs as trainee or technical engineers and build experience toward a licence.

- A B.Tech alone does not let you certify aircraft — the DGCA licence does.
- Shift and night work is common.
- Next roles: licensed engineer, shift supervisor, quality or planning roles in an MRO.
